Scientific discovery is powered by high-dimensional multimodal data – also known as frontier data – which drives novel drug discovery in an increasingly competitive landscape. Frontier data is critical in the era of foundation models for biology, but is difficult to mine using status quo data engineering approaches, and often leads life sciences data teams into expensive DIY territory. This panel will discuss approaches to address frontier data that drive value faster, FAIRly and cost-effectively.

Gurinder Singh “Mickey” Atwal - Flagship Pioneering

Gurinder Singh “Mickey” Atwal joined Flagship Pioneering in 2024 as Chief Data and AI Officer, Pioneering Intelligence, leading AI and data strategy to accelerate innovation across the Flagship ecosystem. With over 25 years of experience in AI/ML, theoretical physics, genomics, and biotech, Mickey previously served as VP, Head of Molecular Profiling and Data Science at Regeneron. He also held faculty roles at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where he led computational biology research and founded graduate courses in machine learning and coding. Mickey holds multiple patents and has published widely in machine learning, condensed matter physics, and drug development. He earned his BA and MSci in Natural Sciences from Cambridge, a Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell, and conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton and the Institute for Advanced Study.

Ariella has over 20 years working in high-throughput clinical genomics, oncology, and pharma R&D. She is passionate about using technology and big data to accelerate all areas of the value chain to improve outcomes for patients.

A molecular biologist and a science journalist in her past life, she loves to geek out on market trends, latest discoveries and inventions in the space. With over 16 years of experience in life sciences, she previously led product marketing at the nexus of genomics, biopharma and tech, and is passionate about driving technology adoption to advance human health.
